The fact is that ALL football socks suck. If you compare the technical and engineering innovation in Elite Marathon Racing, Ultra Running, and Trail Running - the socks we all wear for team sports are 10+ years behind - and everyone is looking at it the wrong way. Until now.
Look, most football socks are still made from the same families of fibres that have defined the category for years. Cotton or Polyester, with elastane as the necessary structural base. To be fair, each has its place. Cotton is soft. Polyester is light and relatively hydrophobic. Elastane creates stretch. But when you take these fibres and knit them into long unstructured tubes - and then expose them to heat, friction, sweat, and pressure - these ordinary materials start to reveal their limits.
Cotton is terrible - it absorbs moisture, making socks heavier and warmer as you wear them, leading to blisters and holes. Or take Polyester, which is less absorbent than cotton, but offers little long-term resilience and structural durability.
If you then combine these issues, with the classic tube shape without any guiding structure - you get a poor fitting, heavy, performance-limiting tool. It’s like wearing an oven glove to play golf - it would do the job, but like wtf.
The Apex PRO 3.0 was a meaningful step forward for us. By blending natural cotton and fast drying polyester, and using 5 twisted micro-yarns to improve breathability, we created something that felt way better than the basic grip socks out there. It was softer, more comfortable, and more durable than anything else you could find.
But I’ll be the very first to admit it was never the sock we ultimately wanted to make.
I knew we could make the materials lighter. The structure could be more precise. The durability could be better. We could deliver way more comfort without relying on the unnecessary bulk you’ll see with other football socks that rely on thicker yarns and larger fibres to give the impression of quality, rather than actually being quality.
So I spent years researching and testing fibres, traditional grip sock blends, Dri-Release style materials, high-stretch yarns, dense yarns, softer yarns, more technical yarns, and a few experimental options too. It turned out that finding the right material was pretty tough. A performance football sock has to be light, but not flimsy. Breathable, but not loose. Soft, but not fragile. Durable, but not stiff. Elastic, but not restrictive. Hydrophobic, but still comfortable against the skin. Dense enough to feel secure, but light enough to disappear once the boot is on.
That balance became the starting point for UltraDri.
UltraDri is the base yarn system we developed for the ELITE-1: a proprietary ultra-polyamide and dynamic elastane blend design for the specific demands of football.
It delivered everything we wanted… and more. One of the most important breakthroughs came from rethinking density. Most socks use materials to create the feeling of comfort. We wanted to create that same traditional sock comfort, but with less of the unnecessary bulk that makes your neural pathways from your brain to your foot ork hard to maintain balance, proprioception, speed, and decision making.
That led us to what we call Density+.
Instead of relying on larger, heavier yarns to imitate comfort, we used a finer, more precise knit structure to create density without weight. By using significantly more needles in the knitting process (20%-40% more needles than other brands), we can layer in 20%-40% more performance yarns - to build a sock that feels smooth, secure and substantial, while remaining incredibly lightweight and breathable.
I know it’s game-changing for footballers. UltraDri and Density+ have led us to build a sock that precisely balances cloud-like comfort with feel, density with airy-breathability, and support with split-second freedom - giving players a closer, cleaner connection to their boots without the bulk of a traditional sock.
The bottom line is that if the base material of your sock is wrong, everything is compromised. This is what all the other grip sock brands get wrong. Grips applied to a crap sock is still a crap sock. You need to think of the foundation first. That’s what we did with the ELITE-1.
In the next update, I want to talk about why you should never buy another standard football grip sock ever again.
