In the last founder update, I wrote about CompoundX, the grip compound we developed to improve the external connection between the sock, the boot, and your brain.
But, that’s half the problem. A sock can grip the insole perfectly and still fail if the foot is moving inside the sock. That second connection, between skin and fabric - is way more delicate than most brands seem to care about. And it’s also where a lot of these brand have made another critical mistake: internal grip pads.
To be fair, on paper, the idea of internal grip makes sense. If the sock can move against the boot, and the foot can move inside the sock, then surely the solution is to add grip to both sides?
I fully understand why brands arrived at this conclusion, so I’m not trying to throw shade. I wore socks like this myself for years (back in 2013) when I was playing too. But after reading the research, analysing the patents, testing different materials, and spending a slightly ridiculous amount of time studying what actually happens inside a football boot, I began to see the problem very differently.
You see, the job of a high-performance sock isn’t just to increase friction. It’s to make the foot, sock and shoe behave as one clean system. (Elite running seems to understand this clearly). It should eradicate unwanted movement, reduce distraction, improve energy transfer, and remove any neural noise between the foot and brain connection. In a way, the best performance sock should reduce latency, making the communication between foot and brain feel faster and cleaner.
Internal grip pads often do the opposite. This is the key. Adding more is NOT always better.
#1 Because the pad sits against the skin, it increases friction where friction is most risky. Friction creates heat. Heat drives sweat. Sweat changes the way the skin behaves under load. And once the skin becomes warmer under moisture - those small areas of pressure become hot spots, irritation, micro-slippage, and eventually blisters.
#2 They create uneven pressure, leading to poor energy transfer. Research into plantar kinetics (sole movement) shows that optimal energy transfer happens when the entire foot moves as a single unit. Internal grip pads harm this connection, creating isolated pressure points under high-load zones like the forefoot and heel. The result is uneven force distribution, which compromises speed and stability during explosive movements.
#3 Finally - and 100% most importantly - internal grip pads interfere with proprioception. The foot is a miraculous-sensory-system constantly reading pressure, texture, vibration, stretch, and movement. That core info helps the brain understand where the body is in space and how to adjust in split-second real time. When the surface against the skin becomes uneven or overly textured because of those internal pads, the neural signal back to the brain becomes noisier, disrupting the split-second corrections that support balance, stability, and control.
Ultimately, internal grip pads are used to cover up a deeper problem: the sock underneath doesn’t fit. It’s too loose, too baggy, too absorbent, too poorly structured, or too reliant on add-ons to create a feeling of grip and lockdown. It’s a gimmick. A cop out. And it’s time is up.
And this is not only true of internal grip pads. It’s true of the wider football sock category too.
For too long, brands have tried to compensate for poor sock design with visible gimmicks. More external grip. More internal grip. Different grip patterns. Grippier materials. But the real solution is much simpler, and also much harder.
Make a sock that fits your foot perfectly.
A sock that retains structure under immense load. A sock that compresses and oxygenates. A sock that manages moisture. A sock that reduces unwanted movement through material, structure, and fit before grip is ever added. A sock where the foot and fabric behave as one bio-symbiotic - not because they have been forced together by pads against the skin, but because the sock has been engineered properly from the start.
That is the direction we took with ELITE-1.
In the next founder update, I’ll show you how we did exactly that.
